These are the most commonly used and trusted treatment plans for drug-susceptible TB and have been used for many years.
Medicines used in these regimens:
- Isoniazid
- Rifampin
- Pyrazinamide
- Ethambutol
How the treatment works:
- First 2 months (Intensive phase): All four medicines are taken together to control the infection and reduce symptoms.
- Continuation phase:
- Either 4 months of isoniazid and rifampin (total 6 months), or
- 7 months of isoniazid and rifampin (total 9 months)

The 9-month regimen is used in special situations, such as:
- Severe lung damage (cavitary TB)
- Resistance to pyrazinamide
- Patients with HIV who are not receiving HIV treatment.
